Washing Machine

(WM4000HBA) Review

Ranked #2 (Runner-up)
Best Washer of 2025!

Authors: Sharon L, Joan T, Jordan E, Marc K

Introduction

The LG WM4000HBA Front-Load Washing Machine is a masterpiece of modern laundry engineering, a machine that packs so much intelligent technology and raw cleaning power into its sleek frame that it very nearly captured the top spot in our 2025 rankings. It represents a near-perfect blend of speed, smarts, and sophisticated design that elevates the mundane task of doing laundry into a streamlined, high-tech experience. For weeks, this washer became the workhorse of our home, tackling everything from delicate activewear to king-sized bedding with impressive results!

Ultimately, in a field of incredible competitors, a few critical design choices and nuanced long-term considerations are what held it back, cementing its position as our proud runner-up. This is an absolutely phenomenal machine that delivers on its promises, falling just shy of indisputable perfection!

Design and Build Quality

The physical presence of the WM4000HBA is a testament to premium appliance design, looking both robust and refined in any laundry space.

  • Aesthetics and Finish: The Black Steel finish is the star of the show. It’s not a simple flat black; it’s a deep, brushed metallic surface that feels sophisticated and resists fingerprints far better than traditional stainless steel. It’s a modern, almost luxurious finish that instantly makes a laundry room feel more upscale. The real showstopper, however, is the tempered glass door, which is accented with a stunning, shiny rose gold rim. It’s a small touch that has a huge impact, turning a utilitarian appliance into a genuine design statement.

  • Premium Materials: From the moment we unboxed this machine, the quality of the materials was evident. The main cabinet is constructed from heavy-gauge painted steel, providing a solid, durable frame that doesn't feel flimsy. The tempered glass door is a significant upgrade over the plastic doors found on lesser models, offering superior resistance to scratches and shock while providing a crystal-clear view of the wash action inside.

  • NeveRust™ Stainless Steel Drum: Inside, the washer features a NeveRust™ Stainless Steel drum. This is a critical component for both performance and fabric care. Unlike porcelain tubs that can chip and create sharp edges that snag clothes, or plastic tubs that can retain odors, the smooth, polished surface of the stainless steel drum is exceptionally gentle on fabrics. It ensures that your clothes glide over the surface, minimizing wear and tear over hundreds of cycles.

Performance & Core Tech

Beneath its stylish exterior lies an integrated system of advanced technologies engineered for power, precision, and remarkable quietness.

  • Inverter Direct Drive Motor: At its core is LG’s Inverter Direct Drive Motor. Instead of using belts and pulleys—common points of failure and noise—the motor is attached directly to the drum. This brilliant design has fewer moving parts, which is the foundation of the machine's incredible reliability and the reason LG can back it with an amazing 10-year warranty. Throughout our extensive testing, the most remarkable thing was often what we didn't hear; the machine operates with a whisper-quiet hum, making it perfect for installation near living areas or on second floors. It spins up to a powerful 1300 RPM, wringing more water out of clothes for noticeably shorter drying times.

  • AI DD® Technology: This is where the WM4000HBA truly separates itself from the pack. The built-in AI doesn't just sense the weight of your load; it actually analyzes the texture of the fabrics inside. It can tell the difference between a load of rugged denim and a load of soft cottons. It then automatically selects the perfect combination of wash motions from its 6Motion™ Technology—like tumbling, scrubbing, and swinging—to maximize cleaning power while minimizing fabric wear. It’s like having a laundry expert personally tailoring every single wash.

  • TurboWash® 360°: This is, without a doubt, the feature we came to love the most. TurboWash® 360° technology uses five powerful, high-pressure spray jets to surround clothes with a concentrated detergent solution from multiple angles. This completely saturates the load in seconds, allowing the machine to deliver a spectacular clean on a large load of laundry in about 30 minutes!  This isn't a weak "quick wash" for a couple of items; it’s a full-power wash for a real family-sized load, and it’s an absolute game-changer for busy households.

  • Steam and Sanitize: An internal heater allows this washer to get serious about cleaning. The Steam function generates true, hot steam that penetrates deep into fabrics to release tough stains, eliminate odors, and dramatically reduce wrinkles. For households with allergy sufferers, the Allergiene™ Cycle is a lifesaver. It’s certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) to remove over 95% of pet dander and dust mites. The Sanitary cycle uses sustained high heat to kill common household bacteria, providing true peace of mind for items like bedding and children's clothing.

Ergonomics and A Critical Flaw

LG designed this washer with a shallower "closet-depth" profile, making it a great candidate for tighter installations, but this thoughtful design is undermined by a single, baffling oversight.

  • The Non-Reversible Door: The washer door is hinged on the left and is not reversible. This is a massive ergonomic flaw that can’t be ignored. In many standard laundry room layouts, the washer is placed on the right side of the pair. With this machine, the door opens to the left, directly into the space where you need to stand to transfer wet, heavy clothes to the dryer. You’re forced to awkwardly carry laundry around the open door. For a machine marketed for its space-saving depth, this creates an inefficient workflow that runs counter to its entire premise. This single issue is a primary reason the WM4000HBA fell short of the #1 rank; it's a potential deal-breaker that depends entirely on your specific laundry room configuration. For those with a left-side washer setup, however, this becomes a complete non-issue, and the machine's brilliance can be fully appreciated.

Smart Features

LG’s smart features are genuinely useful, moving beyond simple gimmicks to provide real convenience and proactive care for the appliance.

  • Smart Pairing™: This feature is simply brilliant. The washer communicates wirelessly with a compatible LG dryer. When the wash cycle finishes, it tells the dryer exactly what kind of load is coming, and the dryer automatically selects the perfect drying cycle. It’s a seamless handoff that removes guesswork and helps protect your clothes from start to finish.

  • ThinQ® App Control: The ThinQ app is polished and intuitive. You can start the washer remotely (after loading it and enabling it on the washer), monitor the cycle’s progress, and get a notification on your phone or smartwatch the second it’s done. We found this especially useful, as it eliminated the need to constantly check if the quiet machine was still running.

  • Proactive ThinQ Care™: This is where the smart integration truly shines. The system proactively monitors your usage patterns and sends you helpful maintenance tips. For example, it will send a "Tub Clean Coach" reminder after a certain number of cycles, helping you keep the machine fresh and performing at its best. It’s a feature that works to extend the life of your investment.

Reliability

When evaluating long-term prospects, the WM4000HBA presents a complex but important picture that helps explain its runner-up status.

  • Brand-Level Excellence: As a brand, LG consistently earns top marks for the reliability of its front-load washers. Their service rates are among the lowest in the industry, and the 10-year warranty on the motor provides immense peace of mind about the machine's core component. The average owner is highly likely to have a trouble-free experience for many years.

  • The Risk of Complexity: However, this is an incredibly advanced and complex machine. While the core motor is rock-solid, the numerous sensors, steam generators, and sophisticated electronics that enable its amazing features also introduce more potential points of failure. We have seen reports of costly post-warranty issues, like bearing or sensor failures, that can be prohibitively expensive to fix. While these reports are not the norm, the existence of such a risk is a trade-off for the cutting-edge technology. This slight element of risk is what gives a simpler, more robust competitor an edge for the top spot.

Conclusion: The Runner Up

image.png

The LG WM4000HBA Front-Load Washing Machine is a technological triumph and an absolutely fantastic appliance. Its ability to deliver a powerful, deep clean on a large load in about 30 minutes is nothing short of revolutionary for daily life. The AI-powered fabric care, the potent steam and sanitize cycles, and the genuinely useful smart features create a user experience that feels futuristic and incredibly efficient!

However, it is a machine that is one crucial step away from being the undisputed best. The non-reversible door is a perplexing ergonomic flaw for certain layouts, and the inherent complexity of its advanced systems introduces a small but noteworthy risk for long-term reliability. These are the factors that prevent it from claiming the crown and landing as our runner-up pick! ✨✨✨
