ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 Review
Ranked #2 (Runner-Up)
for Best Gaming Laptop of 2025!
Authors: Tony N, David U, Sara W, Tommy L
Introduction
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 earns its spot as the rank #2 best gaming laptop of 2025 by striking a rare balance: it’s an ultra-premium machine that merges high-octane performance with refined design, professional-grade visuals, and real portability, all without losing its gaming DNA.

In our hands-on testing, we spent weeks living with the G16 as our daily driver, and what stood out immediately was its identity: this is a laptop that’s equally at home running AAA titles at high settings as it is on a studio desk editing 4K footage or at a coffee shop handling productivity tasks. It is this high-low versatility that puts it in a class of its own—and just shy of our top spot.
Design and Build Quality
The Zephyrus G16’s chassis is an immediate statement of intent, shedding its more traditional gaming look for something far more elegant and refined.
-
CNC-Milled Unibody Aluminum Chassis: The moment we unboxed the 2025 Zephyrus G16, the high-end craftsmanship was unmistakable. The aerospace-grade 6063 aluminum construction feels dense, cold to the touch, and impossibly sturdy. Despite packing top-tier internals, it remains surprisingly light at just under 4.3 pounds and thin enough to rival ultrabook laptops.
-
Premium Color Option: The new Platinum White finish is breathtaking. It feels more like a luxury device than a gaming rig and resists fingerprints far better than darker finishes.
-
Subtle Elegant Design: In a tasteful move away from overly aggressive gamer aesthetics, the lid features a simple, elegant diagonal LED strip ASUS calls "Slash Lighting." It’s a customizable accent that can be programmed for notifications or subtle lighting effects. We found it to be a sophisticated touch that adds a bit of personality without screaming for attention, and for professional environments, it can be disabled completely for a perfectly minimalist appearance.
-
Deliberate Hinge Design: To accommodate its powerful rear-exhaust cooling system, the hinge is designed to open to a maximum angle of about 130 degrees. This is a conscious engineering choice to ensure hot air is never blocked by the screen. While this means the screen doesn’t lay perfectly flat, it’s a smart trade-off that prioritizes sustained performance. We also noted a very faint creaking sound from the hinge assembly on our unit when opening and closing the lid, a minor imperfection in what is otherwise a flawlessly constructed chassis.
Display
This screen is the single most impressive feature of the Zephyrus G16 and the centerpiece of the entire experience.

-
ROG Nebula OLED: This is one of the first ROG laptops to feature a glorious 2.5K OLED panel, and the results are simply spectacular. The technology's ability to produce perfect, inky blacks creates a near-infinite contrast ratio that makes colors pop with an unbelievable vibrancy. During our hands-on time, every game, movie, and photo we viewed on this screen was rendered with a depth and richness that traditional LCD panels simply cannot replicate.
-
Fluidity and Response: The combination of a blistering 240Hz refresh rate and a virtually instantaneous 0.2ms response time is a game-changer. Motion is rendered with a sublime smoothness and clarity that is hard to describe. In the competitive shooters, RPGs, and racing games we tested, ghosting and motion blur were completely nonexistent, providing a crystal-clear picture that gave us a tangible competitive edge.
-
For Gamers and Creators: The display is a master of all trades. Full support for NVIDIA G-Sync synchronizes the screen with the graphics card, eliminating ugly screen tearing and stutter for a perfectly smooth gaming experience. At the same time, it is a professional-grade creative tool, boasting 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and Pantone Validation for superb color accuracy, making it a reliable canvas for our photo and video editing work.
-
The Glossy Trade-Off: To achieve its incredible contrast and vibrancy, the OLED panel has a glossy finish. This is the key to its stunning image quality, but it does mean the screen is quite reflective. When we used the laptop in brightly lit rooms or near sunny windows, we did have to contend with some glare, but we found that the screen’s impressive brightness was usually enough to overcome it with a slight tilt.
Performance
The Zephyrus G16 is engineered to deliver incredible performance, but with an intelligent focus on balance and efficiency rather than raw, unconstrained power.
-
Latest-Generation Processor: The latest Intel Core Ultra processors provide the brains of the operation, delivering snappy, responsive performance across the board. Apps launch instantly, and heavy multitasking is handled with ease. These chips also feature a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for accelerating AI tasks, a forward-looking addition that promises to enhance efficiency for a new wave of applications. Throughout our daily use, the system felt consistently fast and fluid, whether we were working on excel sheets or just browsing the internet.
-
The TGP Bottleneck: This is the most significant compromise of the G16’s design. To keep temperatures in check within the ultra-slim chassis, the powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs are configured with a lower Total Graphics Power (TGP) than you would find in a thicker, heavier gaming laptop. Our testing confirmed that while a top-tier RTX 5090 (2025 Zephyrus model) or RTX 4090 (2024 Zephyrus model) is still immensely powerful, it doesn't reach the same peak frame rates as its full-power counterparts. This is the primary reason the G16 is our runner-up; it prioritizes form factor over raw, unthrottled power.
-
The Performance Sweet Spot: Because of the power limitations, we found that the absolute top-end GPU configurations offer diminishing returns. The true sweet spot for this chassis lies in the upper-mid-range, such as the RTX 5070 configuration in the new 2025 model or the RTX 4070 in the 2024 model. This GPU provides a phenomenal gaming experience that is perfectly matched to the laptop's thermal and power delivery capabilities, representing a much better balance of performance and value.
Keyboard and Trackpad
ASUS has perfected the primary points of interaction, making the G16 a genuine pleasure to use for both work and play.
-
Keyboard: The keycaps are 12% larger than previous models and feature a soft-touch finish and a satisfying amount of travel. We spent hours writing documents and engaging in long gaming sessions, and our hands never felt fatigued. The typing feel is both responsive and quiet, striking a perfect balance for any environment.
-
Glass Touchpad: The touchpad is enormous, a huge pane of smooth glass that feels fantastic under the fingertip. It is incredibly precise for navigation and multi-finger gestures, and its oleophobic coating does a great job of resisting fingerprints. Its sheer size can occasionally lead to an accidental palm touch when using the laptop on your lap, but on a desk, it is one of the best trackpads we have ever used on a Windows machine.
Battery Life and Connectivity
The G16 is a master of connectivity, though its identity as a portable machine is challenged by its real-world battery performance.

-
Battery Life Paradox: This is perhaps the G16's most significant weakness. Despite being equipped with modern, power-efficient processors, the real-world battery life is a major disappointment with our testing showing only an average of 7 hours of mixed use (doing everything except for gaming). For gaming, we averaged 2 hours. This is one of the major factors to why it's this year's runner-up ranking.
-
Creator's Dream I/O: The port selection is nothing short of spectacular for a thin-and-light laptop. With multiple USB-A and USB-C ports, HDMI 2.1, Bluetooth 5.4, and high-speed Wi-Fi 7, it’s ready for anything. The inclusion of a full-size, high-speed UHS-II SD card reader is a massive victory for photographers and videographers, cementing its status as a true hybrid device.
-
Price of Power: The laws of physics are unavoidable. To dissipate heat effectively within this thin frame, the chassis can become noticeably warm above the keyboard during extended, heavy gaming sessions. Furthermore, when the system is set to Performance or Turbo mode, the fans become quite loud. In our experience, the fan noise is a necessary trade-off for the incredible level of performance packed into such a portable design; it's the sound of the machine working hard to keep everything running at peak speed.
Audio and Webcam
The audiovisual experience on the G16 is a standout, elevating it as a premier device for both communication and media consumption.
-
Powerful Audio: The six-speaker sound system is, frankly, astounding for a laptop this thin. With four woofers providing surprisingly deep bass and two tweeters for crisp highs, the audio is rich, loud, and incredibly immersive. Support for Dolby Atmos creates a wide, cinematic soundstage that made watching movies and playing atmospheric games an absolute joy, even without headphones. It is easily best-in-class.
-
Sufficient Webcam and Mics: The 1080p webcam includes an IR sensor for fast and secure Windows Hello facial recognition. The image quality is perfectly adequate for video calls, though it can struggle in low-light conditions. The AI-powered microphone array does an excellent job of isolating your voice from background noise, ensuring you come through clearly in meetings.
Conclusion: The Runner Up

The 2025 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is a triumph of industrial design and a statement piece that successfully blurs the line between a gaming laptop and a professional creative workstation. Its stunning OLED display, phenomenal speaker system, and sleek minimalist design creates an experience of pure luxury. It is a machine that you will constantly admire.
However, its beauty is the very source of its compromises. The relentless pursuit of thinness results in throttled peak GPU performance, extremely high surface temperatures, loud fan noise, and disappointing battery life. These are not flaws so much as they are the calculated, unavoidable consequences of its design philosophy. It is this collection of trade-offs that holds it back from the absolute #1 position, making it the runner-up for 2025's best gaming laptop.
For the user who values aesthetics, portability, and a beautiful OLED display above all else, the Zephyrus G16 is a near-perfect machine and an easy recommendation. It is an incredible, if beautifully flawed, contender for the throne. 🎉🎉🎉
