Columbia Men’s Watertight II Rain Jacket Review

Ranked #2 (Runner-up)
for Best Jacket for
Men in 2025!

Authors: Tommy L, Jacob P, Karly R, Marc K

Introduction

The Columbia Men’s Watertight II Rain Jacket has become a cornerstone of outdoor and everyday apparel, a go-to piece for anyone needing reliable protection from the elements.

We have spent countless months with this jacket, wearing it through unpredictable spring showers, windy chilly autumn nights, and everything in between, truly integrating it into our daily lives. Its reputation as a bestseller is not just a matter of marketing; it is earned through consistent, dependable performance where it matters most!

Although it does fall short on a few features and flaws, its rank #2 position in 2025 is secured by its masterful execution of the fundamentals: effective waterproofing, durability, comfort, and packability that aligns with the needs of the vast majority of users!

Design and Build Quality

The Watertight II makes a stellar first impression that only grows stronger with use, showcasing a build that is both surprisingly tough and intelligently designed for everyday convenience.

  • Classic & Versatile Aesthetic: The jacket boasts a clean, uncluttered look that is just as appropriate in a city setting as it is on a light trail. It avoids the overly technical or "outdoorsy" appearance of many competitors, allowing it to function as a go-to piece of outerwear for almost any casual occasion. The sheer variety of available colors, from understated neutrals to bold, vibrant hues, ensures there is a perfect match for any personal style.

  • Robust & Lightweight: The moment you handle the jacket, the quality of the 100% Nylon Full Dull plain weave fabric is immediately apparent. It feels substantial and durable, inspiring confidence that it can handle the rigors of daily use without issue. Yet, despite this robust feel, the jacket remains astonishingly lightweight. Our hands-on experience confirmed that at just over 13 ounces, it’s the kind of jacket you can wear all day or carry in a bag and completely forget it’s there.

  • Packability: One of the jacket’s most celebrated features is its ability to pack down into its own hand pocket. This transforms the entire garment into a compact, brick-sized bundle that can be effortlessly tossed into a backpack, a car’s glove compartment, or a travel bag. This feature alone makes it an absolutely essential item for travel or for anyone living in a region with unpredictable weather.

  • Fit & Layering: The jacket features a "Regular Fit" that is intentionally designed to be roomy and non-restrictive. This is a massive advantage, providing ample space to comfortably layer a fleece or a thick sweater underneath in colder weather without feeling constricted. This thoughtful sizing makes the Watertight II a true four-season shell, adaptable to a wide range of temperatures and conditions.

Weather Protection Technology

At its core, a rain jacket has one primary job, and the Watertight II performs this duty with flawless reliability.

  • Omni-Tech™: The heart of the jacket is Columbia’s proprietary Omni-Tech™ waterproof system. This multi-layered technology creates a nearly impenetrable barrier against rain. In our daily testing, we were caught in everything from light drizzles to heavy downpours, and the result was always the same: perfectly dry. The technology works by blocking external moisture completely while still allowing for a degree of air permeability. But there was a limit to the Omni-Tech, after 3+ hours of very heavy rain we did get lightly wet underneath.

  • Fully Seam-Sealed: A waterproof fabric is useless if the seams leak, and this is where the Watertight II truly shines. It is fully seam-sealed, meaning every single stitch hole created during its construction is covered with waterproof tape. This is a premium feature that guarantees no water can sneak through the shoulders, arms, or torso seams, providing complete, top-to-bottom protection. It’s this attention to detail that builds immense trust in the jacket’s performance.

  • Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Finish: The exterior fabric is treated with a powerful DWR coating that causes water to bead up and roll right off the surface. It is incredibly satisfying to watch rain droplets simply slide away, preventing the face fabric from becoming saturated or "wetting out." This not only keeps the jacket feeling light and comfortable but also maintains its performance over long periods in the rain.

Comfort

Columbia has engineered the Watertight II with a clear focus on all-day comfort for the everyday user.

  • Comfortable Mesh Liner: Unlike many technical shells that can feel slick or "plasticky" against the skin, the Watertight II features a full polyester mesh liner. This hanging liner creates a soft, comfortable barrier between you and the waterproof membrane, making the jacket exceptionally pleasant to wear over a short-sleeve shirt. For us, this single feature was a game-changer for casual comfort, but with one flaw which is that after long physical activity it felt a bit sweaty underneath.

  • Made for the Elements: The jacket is a masterclass in purpose-driven design. It is built to keep you dry and comfortable during everyday activities: commuting, running errands, walking the dog, or attending an outdoor event. It provides a perfect level of protection and warmth for these scenarios. For high-output aerobic activities like trail running or mountaineering, one would naturally turn to a different category of specialized, hyper-ventilated gear. The Watertight II’s design is a deliberate choice to maximize comfort and foolproof water protection for its intended, and most common, use case.

  • No Pit Zippers: Pit zippers can be crucial for the right person needing extra breathability, and Columbia decided to not add them in this jacket for a reason. The benefits of not having a pit zip is firstly aesthetics, a cleaner looking jacket. Secondly it eliminates potential points of failure that might need repairing. Zippers can also add bulk and create areas where water could potentially seep in over time. Lastly, the benefit is to cut costs and allow this jacket to be sold at a more affordable price compared to more expensive jackets like this one (see pricing below).

Features

Every feature on the Watertight II is thoughtfully designed to enhance protection and convenience.

  • Adjustable Storm Hood: The attached hood is perfectly designed. It offers substantial coverage to protect your face and head from driving rain and wind. Drawcords on either side allow you to cinch it down for a snug, secure fit, while the integrated brim helps keep rain from dripping into your eyes. It strikes an ideal balance between maximum protection and maintaining good peripheral vision.

  • Zippered Security & Chin Guard: The two zippered hand pockets provide secure storage for a phone, wallet, or keys. The main zipper, while lightweight, can be a bit finicky to use and seems a bit fragile. One thing that Columbia added to the jacket is a nice abrasion-resistant chin guard at the top of the zipper. This small flap of soft fabric prevents the zipper from chafing your chin when the jacket is fully zipped up—a small but deeply appreciated comfort detail.

  • Customizable Fit System: The jacket includes a full suite of adjustments to seal out the elements. The hook-and-loop tabs on the sleeve cuffs can be cinched tight to prevent water from running down your arms, while the drawcord-adjustable hem allows you to block wind from blowing up into the jacket. These features allow you to create a personalized, weather-tight fit.

Durability

The Watertight II is not a disposable piece of gear; it is a long-term investment in staying dry.

  • Tough Shell Fabric: The nylon face fabric is exceptionally robust. It has a tough, resilient feel that has proven to be highly resistant to the scuffs, snags, and abrasions of everyday life. Throughout our extensive use, the jacket showed no signs of wear, suggesting it is built to last for many seasons of reliable use.

  • Built for the Long Haul: This is a jacket that inspires confidence in its longevity. The quality of the construction, from the fabric to the seam sealing, indicates that it is designed to be a dependable staple in a wardrobe for years to come. Unlike flimsy, budget raincoats that might last a season, the Watertight II is built to endure, making it an incredible value. The components are chosen for a perfect balance of lightweight performance and reliable durability, ensuring it remains your go-to rain shell year after year.

Conclusion: The Runner Up

The Columbia Men’s Watertight II Rain Jacket earns its #2 ranking by doing exactly what most men need a rain shell to do: keep weather out, stay comfortable through daily life, and disappear when skies clear, while layering in durability and style that far exceed its weight class

After living in it through erratic rain storms, bustling airport connections, and quiet Saturday night strolls, we’re convinced it represents the sweet spot where trustworthy protection meets everyday practicality. That's not to say that it has it's short-comings which include not having pit zippers, a flimsy main zipper, and can get humid if you exert yourself too much while wearing the jacket. Still, if you are looking for a jacket that consistently outperforms expectations within it's price range, the Columbia Watertight II Rain Jacket is it! 🎉🎉🎉
